Bathinda: After 26 years a Bathinda court declared Prof. Devender Pal Singh Bhullar’s father Balwant Singh as dead.
The court’s decision has a stamp on enforced disappearances carried by Punjab police during militancy.
Today (Jun 31), the court accepted indirectly that Balwant Singh, who was picked up 26 years ago, killed by the police.
In the 26-year-old case, the court declared Balwant Singh as dead, but keep silence about the reasons for his death and the culprits.
It’s notable that Balwant Singh, a senior official of the Punjab Government Department in Chandigarh, was arrested by Chandigarh and Bathinda police from his village, Dayalpura Bhaika on Dec. 12, 1991.
After running from pillar to post to find him, His family had filed an appeal in the court. Balwant Singh’s wife Upkar Kaur’s lawyer Harpal Singh Khara said that after the petition filed by her on January 14, 2013, the court declared Balwant Singh as dead.
Mata Upkar Kaur said that her husband was picked up and killed by the police. However, the police is refusing to do so.
