Chandigarh: Ajaib Singh Bhatti was on Friday elected Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. Cabinet Minister Brahm Mohindra escorted Bhatti to the Deputy Speaker’s seat.
The 65-year-old Bhatti is an MLA from Malout (Reserve) constituency. He had won the Assembly elections from Bhucho in Bathinda in 2007 and 2012.
As a former PCS officer, Bhatti had served as Additional Deputy Commissioner in Muktsar and Bathinda districts. He joined the Congress in 2007 and is a native of Bathinda.
Leader of the Opposition HS Phoolka before entering the House said, “It would have been better had the Deputy Speaker been chosen from the opposition. This is tradition in some states. All the same, we congratulate Bhatti.”
