Amritsar: The eminent economist and writer Sardara Singh Johl said that Badals have ruined the institution of Akal Takht by making Jathedars and Panj Pyaras as employees of the SGPC.
Johl was addressing a gathering during the release of a book, “Akal Takht: Revisiting Miri in Political Imagination”, written by American Sikh scholar Amandeep Singh.
This is degradation of the supreme institution, he said, suggesting the adoption of a selection procedure on the lines of Roman Catholic Church, where a collegium selects the pope.
Talking about the book, author Amandeep Singh said: “Our original art forms are suffering. Not only politics, Akal Takht too should play a role to promote art and education. Intellectuals and academicians should take responsibility to engage in discussions under the patronisation of the Takht.”
Dr Harjit Singh Gill, Professor emeritus Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, alleged that the SGPC had removed centuries old trees from historical gurdwaras, including Golden Temple.
Kiranjot Kaur, an SGPC member, said Sikhs were lacking on foresighted political leadership. She criticised the Guru Granth Sahib Satikar Committee for violence in the name of respect of Gurus.
