Bhogpur: Sikh political prisoner Bhai Harminder Singh Mintoo was cremated at his native Dalli village here on Friday.Earlier, his body kept at the village gurdwara for paying tributes.
Thousands of Sikh activists from all over Punjab arrived here to be part of Bhai Harminder Singh Mintu’s funeral.
Mintoo’s mother Gurdev Kaur and younger brother Satinder Singh flew from Goa for the cremation. While Mintoo had involved himself in KCF activities, his family migrated to Goa in the early 80s.
His wife Nirmaljeet Kaur and two children could not attend the last rites.
Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma, Dal Khalsa patron Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu, Dal Khalsa president Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema, Dal Khalsa’s former president S. Harcharanjit Singh Dhami, SAD (Amritsar) General Secretary S. Amrik Singh Ballowal, SAD (Amritsar) senior leader Jathedar Narinder Singh Khusropur, Sikh activist Bhai Papalpreet Singh and others were prominent among funeral attendees.
Meanwhile, Damdami Taksal head Harnam Singh Dhumma accused the Punjab Government of letting Mintoo die “a slow death”. “He was suffering from a serious heart ailment and was in need of critical care,” he claimed.
He added that despite completing their sentence, over 150 former militants were languishing in jails. “All of them must be released immediately.
