Chandigarh: As per media news a special court of CBI awarded life sentence till death to Bhia jagtar Singh Tara in Beant Singh assassination case.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) demanded the capital punishment for Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara, while Bhai Tara’s lawyers did not oppose to the CBI.
Bhai Tara was charged under Section 302 (murder), Section 307 (attempt to murder) and Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and under sections 3 and 4 of the Explosive Substances Act, according to The Indian Express.
It’s pertinent to note here that Beant Singh was killed in a bomb blast outside the Punjab and Haryana Secretariat in August 1995. The blast killed 17 others, including a constable who had acted as a human bomb. Punjab Police constable Dilawar Singh was the human bomb. Tara is the eighth accused facing trial, to be convicted. Six others were declared proclaimed offenders. There was one acquittal
He was booked under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
Bhai Tara has confessed to his crime thrice till date stating that he killed the former CM because ‘Sikh history taught him not to bear injustice and the circumstances at that time were intolerable as innocent sikh youths were being massacred’.
A CBI court has already convicted Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara, Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana Bhai Paramjit Singh Bheora, Bhai Gurmeet Singh, Bhai Lakhwinder Singh, Bhai Shamsher Singh.
