BJP says no to SAD for post of Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha

Chandigarh: The Sharomani Akali Dal (SAD) may not participate in voting for the election of Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha as its alliance partner BJP rejected the claim of for the post of Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha.

The SAD had proposed a two-member panel of Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Naresh Gujral to consider any of the two for the post but the same was rejected by the BJP.

The decision was taken at a meeting of SAD leaders at the residence of its president Sukhbir Badal in New Delhi.

The party has three lawmakers in the Upper House, including Naresh Gujral, whose name was also in contention.

The BJP-led NDA lacks majority in the Rajya Sabha.

Miffed over the rejection, SAD president convened a meeting of the SAD parliamentary group. Sources said the Akalis may not participate in voting for the election of Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha.

SAD MP Prem Singh Chandumajra confirmed the meeting was held to chalk the party’s strategy on the issue.

Sukhbir Badal has called another meeting on Tuesday, August 7 to deliberate over the situation arising out of the rejection of his party’s claim to the post as alliance partner.
