Amritsar: SGPC appointed Jathedars on Monday pronounced ‘tankhah’ (religious punishment) on 39 Sikh leaders belonging to SAD, Congress and AAP, who violating the hukamnama against the latter during the state assembly election in February .
Four leaders, including Rajinder Kaur Bhattal (Congress), Janmeja Singh Sekhon (SAD), Ajaib Singh Bhatti (Congress) and Arjan Singh Badal (Congress), who could not turn up sent their excuse to the Akal Takht.
As per reports former SAD MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali was let off after he submitted a clarification before the five high priests that he was never part of the dera congregation nor did he approach it to seek support in any way. After finding no proof against him, he was absolved of all charges.
Controversy arose after some candidates from the Malwa region had attended a meeting of Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda’s political wing in Bathinda. It was reported that the leaders assured to facilitate the religious congregation of the dera head in Punjab, if voted to power again.
Later, Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh had announced to extend support to the SAD-BJP combine for the Assembly polls.
On May 17, 2007, the then Jathedars Joginder Singh Vedanti, Iqbal Singh, Tarlochan Singh, Balwant Singh Nandgarh and Sri Darbar Sahib priest Jagtar Singh — had issued ‘hukumnama’ for the Sikh community to boycott the Sirsa dera head socially, religiously and politically for his indulgence in blasphemous act of impersonating Guru Gobind Singh.
