SGPC again writes Jaitley for waiver GST on langar

Amritsar: As per media reports Sikh body Sharomani Gurdwara parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has again asked the Centre to waive the GST on items for langar at gurdwaras, majorlySri Darbar Sahib Amritsar.

According to The Tribune SGPC President Gobind Singh Longowal has written a letter to GST council chairperson and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, urging him to review the imposition of GST on langar items.

“Since July, we have been paying GST on langar purchase. We are facing extra burden on a service which is offered free of cost. I request the Finance Minister to announce total immunity from paying any kind of tax on items that are meant to prepare langar in gurdwaras,” he said.

It’s pertinent to mention here that Punjab’s Captain Government has already decided to waive its 50% share of the GST imposed on ‘Langar’ (community kitchen) at Sri Darbar Sahib in Amritsar.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)’s delegation led by president Sukhbir Singh Badal met the BJP President Amit Shah in New Delhi on March 22 and urged him to get a GST waiver for Langar.
