Amritsar: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) appealed to the visiting French President Emmanuel Macron to resolve the Turban and others matters pertaining to the Sikh community in his country.
SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal stated that the members of the Sikh community had been struggling against the French Government since it prohibited the wearing of turban through an order in 2004.
Following this order, it was necessary for French citizens of Sikh faith to provide their photographs without turban on all government documents, including, passports, driving licences, health cards, bus passes and identity cards.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief added that the French Government was not even allowing employment to turbaned persons.
Longowal expressed his dismay that Sikh children were not even allowed in schools with “patka”.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief even requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene to resolve the issues of the Sikh community in France.
