Fatehgarh Sahib:  As per reports that  Sharomani Gurduwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) remove Giani Gurmukh Singh as jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama in a meeting of its executive at Fatehgarh Sahib on Friday.

He had been critical of the SGPC and also pointed fingers at Parkash Singh Badal and Sukhbir Singh Badal, on Dera Sirsa chief pardon issue.

While he has been appointed head granthi of a gurdwara in Haryana’s Jind district, Giani Harpreet Singh of Gurdwara Sri Muktsar Sahib has been given additional charge as jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib.

SGPC chief Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar later said that Giani Gurmukh Singh has not followed the Sikh maryada (code of ethics) by not attending meetings of the clergy — including the jathedars of the four other takhts — particularly at which religious punishment was handed out to Sikhs who had violated the maryada.

This included a recent meeting where 39 leaders were given punishment for violating an edict of the highest temporal seat Akal Takht by seeking poll support from Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda. The boycott-dera boycott edict had been issued in 2007 after dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh allegedly dressed up as the tenth Sikh master, Guru Gobind Singh.

Unhappy that Sikh high priests were meeting in a room and not at the Akal Takht, Giani Gurmukh Singh had boycotted the meeting. He did not attend the meeting even after being requested by Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh. He said as per ‘maryada’ the meeting of the high priests has to take place at the Akal Takht. “Till the time meetings are held at the secretariat, I will not participate. My conscience doesn’t allow,” he had said.

The decision was taken by the 15-member SGPC executive led by president Kirpal Singh Badungar. Two of the executive members reportedly were against the decision, but the majority prevailed.
