Amritsas: The sewa of cleaning the gold plating on Sri Harimandir Sahib Amritsar started today. A team from Nishkam Sewak Jatha, a UK-based Sikh volunteers’ group, commenced cleaning of Sri Harimandir Sahib’s gold plating.
The group from Birmingham has been visiting the holy city every year for the purpose for the past almost two decades.
SGPC chief secretary Dr Roop Singh said the cleaning was done with reetha (soapnut) after boiling it and then letting the liquid return to room temperature.
“Though the pollution level is down, the exercise is done annually to remove dust, bird droppings and particles that settle on the surface of the golden domes,” he said.
